SEATTLE, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The following blog post was published on January 12, 2010, by Shafeen Charania, author of the synthesis blog, winner of the 2008 Weblog award for best new blog, and Time.com's 25 best blogs of 2009.
Organizations that are hiring today are benefiting from high unemployment and tough times – they can pick the best candidates at lower salaries. But if you are looking for work, this is not so good. If you are a recent graduate things are actually worse.
Rather than improving things, some State Secretaries of Education are making it worse – they are lowering high school graduation standards! Their belief is this will help create more graduates, and while it's true that graduates are more likely to find work than drop-outs, surely they can understand that lowering the standards in a market where employers can be selective is not going to work?
Moreover, if you lower a bar, people will aim lower, and that pulls down performance across all students! This is just plain dumb.
