Tableau Software Announces Foundation to Reinforce Mission through Philanthropic Efforts; Issues Round of Inaugural Grants

SEATTLE, Dec. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Tableau Software (NYSE: DATA), a global leader in easy-to-use business analytics software, today announced the Tableau Foundation, part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, created to encourage the use of facts and analytical reasoning to solve the world's problems. The Tableau Foundation was initially established with a grant of funds and Tableau stock in 2012.

Tableau CSR Director Neal Myrick was tapped to lead the foundation in 2014. Myrick previously worked with Tableau as Director of Program Management. His background is in technology and philanthropy, working for companies such as Groundwire, Casey Family Programs, Visio Corp., and Aldus Corp.

Tableau maintains its foundation as a component fund of The Seattle Foundation, which manages philanthropy for more than 700 families and businesses in the region. The Seattle Foundation provides fund administration, investment management and philanthropic consulting to supportive effective philanthropy.

A workgroup of Tableau employees have identified the focus areas for our grant making programs, and we have begun by making several initial grants. The Tableau Foundation is launching with three initial focus areas for grantmaking:

• Strategic grant making and initiatives – supports projects and organizations that are tightly aligned with the Tableau Foundation mission
• Community and disaster relief – supports grants in communities where Tableau has offices
• Employee matching grants and volunteering – supports employee gifts of time and money to nonprofits they care about

At launch, the Tableau Foundation is announcing grants to two global organizations that are taking a data-driven and analytical approach to solving problems:

• Dimagi – Dimagi is an award-winning global health technology organization that delivers open and innovative technology to help underserved communities around the world. Tableau's grant will go toward Dimagi's efforts, collaborating alongside Ericsson, Columbia University's Earth Institute, Partners in Health and others, to provide a detailed reporting system from mobile data collection tools that will help organizations working in West Africa to better combat the Ebola outbreak.
• PATH – PATH is the leader in global health innovation. An international nonprofit organization, PATH has been focused on saving lives and improving health globally, especially among women and children, for nearly 40 years in more than 70 countries. PATH received a large grant from the United States Agency for International Development to address the HIV epidemic in Western Kenya, which has the sixth largest HIV epidemic in the world. PATH has the on-the-ground expertise to mitigate the epidemic. Visualizing the health data in Tableau will help them make more strategic programmatic and evidence based decisions and design more effective interventions for greater impact.

Tableau is also announcing support for GiveMeTap, an organization creating a more sustainable way for people to get water on-the-go by partnering with local cafes to distribute free tap water to people carrying GiveMeTap water bottles. For each bottle purchased, GiveMeTap helps provide clean drinking water to people in Africa. The Tableau Foundation has purchased GiveMeTap water bottles for its employees and partnered with the organization to open two new taps in Seattle: at Milstead & Co. coffeehouse and Cafe Turko, near Tableau's headquarters in the Fremont neighborhood. Tableau employees are helping GiveMeTap to expand its free water network in each community where it has an office.

Since the Tableau Foundation was founded in 2012, it has provided grants to nonprofits Mathcounts, Code.org, The Seattle Foundation's GiveBig campaign, and disaster relief efforts for Typhoon Haiyan and the Oso landslide in Washington State. The Foundation will also purchase branded clothing for Tableau employees from Krochet Kids international, a nonprofit focused on women's empowerment in Uganda and Peru. The nonprofit enterprise generates 85 percent of its sustaining revenue from the sale of apparel handcrafted by women in these countries.
