Takeda Agrees to $2.4 Billion Settlement for Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuits

HOUSTON, May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Fibich, Leebron, Copeland, Briggs & Josephson is pleased to announce that a $2.4 billion settlement has been reached to resolve lawsuits involving individuals who were allegedly harmed after taking the prescription medication Actos. Actos - manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals - has been associated with thousands of alleged cases of bladder cancer. Several of the firm's attorneys were instrumental in the coordination and negotiation of the settlement.
Tommy Fibich - Founding Partner of Fibich, Leebron, Copeland, Briggs & Josephson - and Partner Russell Briggs helped reach the settlement on behalf of more than 3,900 plaintiffs whose cases were consolidated in Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County.

The $2.4 billion will be placed in a settlement fund if 95% of plaintiffs agree to the terms. Compensation will be calculated for each plaintiff based on factors that include the extent of their injuries and cumulative dosage.
The settlement is a significant victory for the thousands of plaintiffs who claim they were diagnosed with bladder cancer after taking Actos, a prescription medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that individuals who took Actos for over one year faced a 40 percent increase in bladder cancer risks.
