TENA Answers Women's Most-Searched Pelvic Floor Questions For Healthy Aging Month

How do you strengthen your pelvic floor?

Del Mar explains: "Don't think that strengthening your pelvic floor means doing hundreds of Kegels. A healthy pelvic floor needs to be strong, but it also needs to be responsive. It should contract when your body needs support and relax when it doesn't.

Instead of endlessly training the visible abs, go back to the foundation: breath, pelvic floor, deep core, and movement all working together."

How do you relax a tight pelvic floor?

Del Mar adds, "One of the simplest places to start is breathing. The diaphragm and pelvic floor are designed to move together. That is why slow diaphragmatic breathing, gentle pelvic movement, and releasing unnecessary tension through the abdomen, hips, and glutes can be helpful.

Sometimes the most important pelvic floor exercise is learning how to let go. Persistent pain, pressure, or difficulty relaxing should be assessed by a healthcare professional."

What is pelvic floor therapy and what does it involve?

Del Mar says: "Pelvic floor physical therapy looks at breathing, posture, movement, abdominal function, hips, and how the pelvic floor contracts and relaxes. Depending on the individual and their symptoms, assessment and treatment may also involve internal examination or manual therapy with the patient's consent.

The human body is a system. Pelvic floor therapy tries to understand that system rather than telling every woman to squeeze the same muscle."
