Morse's invention of Morse code would still be relevant, especially considering one of the hottest tech companies on earth has added a Morse code keyboard to their smartphones. In times past, students vocalized the written dots and dashes of this language as "dits" and "dahs," respectively. How exactly has Morse code changed the world? And why is it still relevant? The most obvious answer is that it revolutionized communication, first within America and then transatlantically. It changed the way wars were fought and radically improved the way journalists and news media shared information. An unconventional example of Morse code's many applications can be seen in the true story of U.S. Navy Commander Jeremiah Denton, who was a prisoner of war in Hanoi, Vietnam, during the Vietnam conflict for many years. During a propaganda video that a Japanese journalist filmed, he spelled out the word "torture" with his eyes using Morse code. While his brazen act of defiance did not give him freedom, his message was useful to the U.S. military in understanding that POWs in Vietnam were being tortured.

Morse code also has many applications for those living with physical impairments and disabilities. For example, the big tech company that included Morse code in its keyboard interface for its smartphones did so to make their communication tools more inclusive for disabled people. Other companies have created two-switch input devices to help the disabled who cannot use a keyboard access the internet.
