TORONTO, Nov. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - The highly-anticipated DOCTOR WHO 50^th anniversary episode THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR drew 1.1 million viewers during its live broadcast at 2:50 p.m. ET on Saturday, securing the largest audience ever on Space, preliminary data from BBM Canada confirms. It was the most-watched entertainment program on Canadian television Saturday, and among the key demos, was second only to hockey. Combined with its encore broadcast at 8 p.m.ET, the two-hour special reached nearly 1.7 million viewers overall. Viewers can relive the 75 minutes of pure joy that was THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR online now at Space.ca.

The historic episode tied as the most-watched entertainment specialty broadcast in Canada this broadcast year to date.* The commercial-free worldwide simulcast of the record-breaking episode made Space the #1 network overall during the special.

A rare, live weekend edition Space's flagship original series INNERSPACE also shattered records drawing 447,000 viewers with its live pre and post specials. With #INNERSPACE trending on Twitter, BEFORE and AFTER THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR drew the highest ever audience for INNERSPACE. Throughout the day, Space was the #1 specialty network with an average audience of 105,000 A25-54 viewers, and 99,000 A18-49 viewers.

During the earth-shattering festivities, viewers were also gifted with a surprise teaser revealing the premiere date for Season 2 of Space's original series, ORPHAN BLACK. The smash hit is set to return on Saturday, April 19, 2014.

In THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR, The Doctors embarked on their greatest adventure in the 75-minute DOCTOR WHO 50th anniversary episode. Starring current Doctor Matt Smith, the tenth Time Lord David Tennant (BROADCHURCH), current companion Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper (SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL), John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), a (SPOILER ALERT) surprise appearance from the fourth Doctor, Tom Baker and a glance at the next incarnation, Peter Capaldi (THE HOUR). Matt Smith made his penultimate appearance as The Time Lord in THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR. The Doctor will regenerate in the upcoming Christmas Special.
