The Lynne Mitchell Foundation Awards Its Fifth-Annual Scholarship To Four Seaview Primary School Students

The scholarship was awarded to Morris, Stephenson, Jones and Rowe based upon academic excellence, financial need, leadership skills and stand-out qualities exhibited in each of their scholarship essays. Each of the awarded students will receive $600 annually for a total of $3,000 over the course of their five-year high school career.  The amount will go directly to each recipient's school fees and assist in any additional school expenses, including lunch, books and transportation to and from school.

"This year's winning students will now have the opportunity to make an impact in their own lives, the lives of their families, and in their communities," said Marlene Gordon, president of the Lynne Mitchell Foundation, which was created to honor her mother, a former teacher at Seaview Primary School. "We hope that their success will inspire others towards academic achievement and growth—creating stronger communities from the inside out."

Beginning in the fall, both Morris and Stephenson will attend Hampton School, an all-girls school in Malvern, Jamaica, while Jones and Rowe will attend St. Elizabeth Technical High School. When asked what they would like to do after high school, all four students said they would like to further their education through higher learning.  Morris aspires to attend the University of the West Indies and pursue a career in the medical field as a doctor, Stephenson and Rowe would like to further their educations in veterinary science to become veterinarians and Jones, who has represented Seaview in track and field at a national level, has hopes of becoming a lawyer.

In addition to the scholarship program, the Lynne Mitchell Foundation directly serves Seaview Primary School by providing resources that will help improve the students' learning conditions. Additional programs for students include, a school transportation program, a school lunch and breakfast program, a back pack drive that provides brand new back packs filled with school supplies to every student in the school at the beginning of the school year, and funds to aid in the renovations of the 56-year-old one-room schoolhouse for students in grades 1 through 6.

"By investing in our youth, we invest in the future of Jamaica," said Gordon. "The children we educate today, become the leaders of tomorrow. They provide the desire. We provide the means."
