The Most-Cited Drug Testing Statistic in the Industry Is Two Years Out of Date
Substituted specimens are down 73% since 2023. Invalid results haven't budged.
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Quick Fix Synthetic, the official distributor of Spectrum Labs' Quick Fix products, today corrected one of the most-repeated numbers in drug testing, using new data Quest Diagnostics quietly published this July. The number in question is a 633% jump in substituted urine specimens back in 2023, a statistic Quick Fix Synthetic itself cited in a release last January. It's now two years out of date, and Quick Fix Synthetic is setting the record straight with the numbers Quest has since published.
Here's why it stuck around so long. Quest called that 2023 jump the worst tampering rate in three decades, and the figure became the go-to statistic on drug test cheating. But the story didn't end there. It just stopped being told. Quest's July data shows substitution rates have fallen every year since, down 73% from where they started. Quest's own July release focused on something else instead, a rise in positive hair drug tests. The tampering story got buried, and nobody picked it up.
That would make a tidy ending. Cheating spiked, then cheating stopped. But it's not the whole picture. Fewer people are trying to beat a test outright, yes. Invalid results tell a different story. That rate barely moved, and it's still running well above where it stood before the spike. One problem went away. The other one didn't.
"The industry kept repeating a number from a single bad year without checking whether it still held," said Dr. Mark Ellison as the Laboratory Formulation Expert in Quick Fix Synthetic. "It doesn't. Deliberate tampering is down sharply. Invalid results aren't, and that's the part of the story nobody's been telling."
A falling substitution rate suggests fewer people are trying to cheat. A stubborn invalid rate points somewhere else - how samples get collected and handled. Temperature outside the required window. Timing. Dilution. None of that involves intent. It's the same argument Quick Fix Synthetic made in its January release on temperature and invalid samples, made before this data existed to back it up. It's also why that release cited a number that's since moved on. Quick Fix Synthetic is correcting it here rather than letting it stand.
The updated rates, broken out by workforce category from 2021 through 2025, come straight from Quest's published data.
