Before establishing the Wana Duma Children's Project, founder, Susanne Garrison, said that, "In 1997 I went to Namibia on an Earthwatch trip to volunteer with CCF (Cheetah Conservation Fund), upon my return I became the NW Chapter Head for CCF and did fundraisers and promoted education programs for endangered species." In 2001, Susanne traveled to Kenya to assist a friend who was in the process of establishing a Cheetah Project. Once there, she became aware of how deeply affected the people were in result of the AIDS epidemic, which was leaving many children orphaned and in need of critical support. In 2008, the Wana Duma Children's Project came to life, and became a nonprofit in the US.
Collection artist Verdayle met Susanne, before Wana Duma existed, through a mutual friend who recognized their shared passions. Over the past 19 years, the two have become close friends, a support system for one another, and as Verdayle stated, "have grown in our need to help things improve for our shared awareness of the injustice of animals, children, and the elderly." She went on to say, "All are united in the reality that they are totally dependent on others for their existence and survival. When that basic care is being ignored and/or abused it comes down to the question for both of us, 'How do you turn your back and walk away?'"
The Mountain® is known for its commitment to quality, as well as being environmentally conscious by using water-based inks, organic dyes, and performing socially responsible production techniques.
