The National Police Association Supports NYPD Detectives Fighting to Protect Earned Benefits

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Police Association (NPA) is urging law enforcement officers, retirees, their families, and Americans who stand with the police to sign the petition calling upon the NYPD Detectives' Endowment Association (DEA) to reject reductions in dental benefits and restore the coverage detectives earned through their service.

This fight is about keeping faith with the men and women who kept faith with their city.

For decades, NYPD detectives answered the call. They hunted murderers, confronted armed criminals, investigated rapes and robberies, worked nights, weekends, and holidays, and carried the burdens of a profession most Americans would never choose to shoulder.

Their benefits were not charity. They were compensation.

Now, according to the petition, retirees who previously received union-funded dental coverage with no premium face a new MetLife arrangement under which the basic Core Plan is far more expensive with far less coverage.

That is not a minor administrative adjustment. For a retired detective living on a fixed income, it can mean hundreds or thousands of dollars coming directly out of the family budget.

There is a principle here that every American who supports law enforcement should understand: a promise made should be a promise kept.

America already asks extraordinary things of its police. Officers are expected to run toward gunfire, confront violent offenders, witness humanity at its worst, sacrifice time with their families, and accept the physical toll that decades of police work bring.

What we cannot do is tell them afterward that the benefits they counted upon have become inconvenient.

The petition asks the DEA Board of Officers and Trustees of the Health Benefit Fund to reconsider the MetLife agreement, eliminate the $1,000 premium requirement and restore the previous standards of coverage.

"Law enforcement supporters should stand beside these detectives because today's reduction can become tomorrow's precedent," said Eddie Hutchison, President of the National Police Association. "When benefits earned through decades of dangerous public service can be diminished after the service has been rendered, every officer and every retiree has reason for concern," Hutchison added.

NYPD detectives did their part. New York should keep its end of the bargain.
