The Nelson Doubleday, Jr. Collection to be Auctioned at Doyle on January 11
New York Auction of the Estate of the Legendary Publisher and Former Owner of the New York Mets
NEW YORK, Jan. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- New York auctioneers Doyle will begin the 2017 auction season with the sale of The Nelson Doubleday, Jr. Collection on Wednesday, January 11.
Nelson Doubleday, Jr. (1933-2015) was the third-generation owner of legendary publishers Doubleday and Company and the former owner of the New York Mets baseball team. A highlight of the Collection is his National League Championship ring presented upon the Mets' heartbreaking loss to the crosstown rival Yankees in the famous Subway Series of 2000. The ring is estimated to sell between $8,000-12,000.
The landmark auction also includes the Doubleday library featuring many publisher's copies of first editions. Somerset Maugham's masterpiece Of Human Bondage was published in a signed limited edition in 1936, of which the Collection offers copy number 1. Among the numerous other authors represented are Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad, Christopher Morley and O. Henry. Also featured in the sale are an important George Washington letter from 1776 and a page from the historic Gutenberg Bible.
Doubleday was an avid yachtsman and included in the sale is his collection of fine American and English nautical paintings. Yacht Racing Off Sandy Hook by James Buttersworth (1817-1894) captures the drama of the annual regatta of the New York Yacht Club in June 1877. One of five works by Buttersworth in the sale, the painting depicts the sole victory of the Active and was likely commissioned by her skipper, Frank W. J. Hurst, a long-time treasurer of the Club. The Collection also offers works by Montague Dawson, Robert Salmon and Eugene Boudin.
Among the other offerings are Georgian furniture, mirrors, decorations, silver and early 19th century English and Chinese export porcelain from the gracious Doubleday home on Long Island's North Shore.
