The Oncology Nurse Community To Host Live Melanoma Webinar
Just in Time for the Summer, and with Melanoma on the Rise in the U.S., TheONC to Provide Oncology Nurses In-Depth Information on the Disease
NORWALK, Conn., July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announced that its online community for oncology nurses – TheONC.org – will host a webinar, "Melanoma: Beyond the Basics," on July 12, 2012 at 12:00 pm EDT.
Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and the fastest growing cancer in the United States, with almost 80,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Patients need to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible, as it is the leading cause of death from skin disease. This webinar aims to ensure nurses are educated on the disease so they can provide patients with optimal treatment and care.
Julianna Paradisi, TheONC blogger and staff oncology nurse in an ambulatory clinic in Portland, Oregon, said, "The United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of melanoma cases over the past few decades. Oncology nurses are at the forefront of care and it is essential that we continue to educate ourselves about novel therapeutic pathways and approaches such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, as well as risk of side effects that can affect patient quality of life. TheONC community is an extremely helpful resource as it consistently provides relevant updated information for those in the oncology nursing community, and our cancer care teams, to ensure we develop professionally and provide the best patient care. Educational, interactive opportunities like the melanoma webinar, offered by TheONC, are part of what makes the site so valuable."
Key highlights of "Melanoma: Beyond the Basics" include:
- Identifying common presentations of primary melanomas
- Discussion about the importance of correct staging of primary melanomas
- Learning about the current standards for treatment of early and later stage melanoma
- Discussing the novel and investigation approaches currently being explored in advanced melanoma
- A question and answer period following the presentation
Launched in February 2012, TheONC is a free, online community exclusively for oncology nurses and the cancer care teams that support them. TheONC unites nurses in a secure environment where they can leverage their collective knowledge, nurture professional growth, and emotionally support each other. Through shared experiences and access to free educational resources such as the melanoma webinar, members of TheONC can improve quality of life for themselves and quality of care for the patients they treat.
