The Physical Store Requires Radical Reinvention to Survive, Warns New Report from PlanetRetail RNG

LONDON, Oct. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- PlanetRetail RNG, an independent research and advisory firm for consumer goods retailers and brands, today published its Store of the Future 2017 Winning Strategies report, which recognises the urgent need to reinvent physical stores. As physical store growth slows, retailers are urgently looking to reshape their existing physical assets by reimagining the store of the future.

Findings from the report reveal that while the rate of new store openings will halve between 2014 and 2022, the top 5 largest grocery retailers (Walmart, Costco, Carrefour, Kroger, Seven & I) will still generate an average of 77% of their sales through big-box grocery formats by 2022. Retailers therefore must improve the relevance of their physical stores through adopting store of the future characteristics.
