The VWR Foundation Awards Over $140,000 in Grants Since February 2015
RADNOR, Pa., June 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The VWR Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to giving back to the science community, approved 16 grants totaling over $140,000 since February of this year. The Foundation supports organizations and programs that are in alignment with its three strategic priorities – research, health and well-being, and science education.
"The VWR Foundation is off to a great start in 2015 after achieving numerous milestones in 2014. We celebrated the Foundation's fifth anniversary and surpassed a grand total of one million dollars in aggregated donations since its inception," stated Jim Bramwell, President of the VWR Foundation. "In 2015, we hope to continue that momentum and create an even bigger impact in the science community - every dollar makes a difference."
In support of the Foundation's commitment to science education, the Foundation awarded a grant to the Uganda Development Initiative (UDI), whose mission is to initiate, encourage and finance sustainable development in rural southwest Uganda with an emphasis on education. The grant provided funds for their SEED (Science Education to Enhance Development) Institute, which brings high quality science education to the young people of southwest Uganda and the surrounding areas.
A grant was also awarded to the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, whose mission is to advance human health and well-being through research to improve the detection and treatment of disease and through training of the next generation of scientists and physicians. The grant provided funds toward the purchase of the Cytation 3, a cell imaging multi-mode microplate reader that combines automated digital microscopy and conventional microplate detection. This equipment will be used in research investigations for heart disease, autoimmune disorders and cancer.
Other organizations who were awarded grants in 2015 from the VWR Foundation include AZUSA Pacific University, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Brigham Young University, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Eastern University, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, JDRF International, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Let's Go Boys & Girls, National University, San Diego Society of Natural History Balboa Park, Schmahl Science Workshops, Science Museum of Minnesota and United States Naval Academy Foundation.
