The Wildcat Behind Your House Cat: Celebrating World African Wildcat Day

MT. RAINIER, Md., Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Every domestic cat traces its origins back thousands of years to the African wildcat (Felis lybica), the wild ancestor of today's house cats.

To highlight this connection, Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) founded World African Wildcat Day, observed each year on September 18th.. The day raises global awareness of the African wildcat, its ecological role, and its link to domestic cats.

The Wildcat Behind Our House Cats

The African wildcat is, in essence, the cat behind all domestic cats. Cat domestication began about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, when wildcats were drawn to early human settlements by rodents around stored grain. Over time, this mutually beneficial relationship led to the domestic cat, Felis catus.

Unlike many domesticated animals, cats largely self-domesticated, gradually adapting to life alongside humans while retaining many wild traits. The African wildcat still exists today, serving as a living link to this shared history.

Protecting the Species

African wildcats face growing threats from habitat loss, disease, and hybridization with free-roaming domestic cats, which can dilute the wild population's genetic identity.

Alley Cat Rescue has long worked in South Africa through its African Wildcat Conservation Action Plan (https://www.saveacat.org/awc-conservation-projects.html), focusing on reducing these threats. A key strategy is spaying and neutering free-roaming domestic cats near wildcat habitats, along with providing vaccinations and veterinary care. These efforts help create buffer zones that reduce hybridization while improving domestic cat welfare.

African wildcats also play an important ecological role across savannas, grasslands, and semi-desert regions, helping control rodent populations and maintain ecosystem balance.

ACR founder and president Louise Holton emphasizes the importance of protecting the species:
