BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Disney Music Group has 3 titles holding top 10 positions in Nielsen Music's 2017's Mid-Year Top 10 Selling Albums (Dec. 30, 2016 – June 29, 2017), including Moana (No. 4), Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 (No. 8) and Beauty and the Beast (No. 10). Disney Music Group's year-to-date album market share for soundtrack albums increased to 41% and for the week ending July 27, the market share rose to 59%, according to Nielsen Music.
In its 25th week of release, the Platinum-certified Moana soundtrack spent 23 weeks in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart and 24 weeks in the Top 10 on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart, and is also in the Top 10 for YTD total consumption. Three tracks have certified Platinum (both versions of "How Far I'll Go" by Auli'i Cravalho and Alessia Cara; "You're Welcome") and one song certified Gold ("Shiny"). In addition to global sales over 2.68 million, the music videos have garnered 1.5 billion views worldwide and the album has over 1 billion streams worldwide.
Disney's Moana earned over $640 million at the global box office and was nominated for two Oscars and two Golden Globes, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("How Far I'll Go").
Beauty and the Beast has over 1.2 million global album sales, over 2.8 million global track sales, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and peaked at No. 2 on the iTunes Overall chart. The album hit No. 1 on iTunes in 15 countries and Top 5 overall in 45 countries. The soundtrack has over 350 million audio streams worldwide and the music videos have collectively garnered over 250 million views.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast is the No. 1 film of the year and the No. 10 film of all time at the global box office with $1.26 billion. It's also the top film of the year and the No. 8 film of all time domestically with $504 million, and its U.S. debut of $174.8 million ranks as the 6th largest opening of all time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix, Vol. 2 peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, and is also ranked No. 3 on Billboard's 2017 Mid-Year Top 10 Rock Albums and No. 2 on Billboard's 2017 Mid-Year Top 10 Selling Rock Albums charts. The soundtrack has over 800K global album sales.
Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has grossed more than $860 million at the global box office to stand as the No. 3 film of the year. Its $146.5 million domestic debut is the No. 2 debut of 2017 with the film going on to earn more than $387 million in the U.S. and Canada.
Building on that momentum, the recently released soundtrack from the hit Disney Channel Original Movie "Descendants 2" debuts at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart after earning 46,000 album equivalent units in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album also debuted Top 5 on several other Billboard charts including Top Soundtracks (No. 1), Top Children's Current (No. 1), Top Pop Current and Overall (No. 2), Top Current Album (No. 4) and Top Current Digital Albums (No.5). "Descendants 2" reached 21 million Total Viewers with an unprecedented simultaneous premiere (Friday, July 21, 8:00 p.m. EDT) on Disney Channel, ABC, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies.
The soundtrack peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes US Overall chart and No. 1 on the Soundtrack US chart. The album is also Top 10 on the iTunes chart in over 10 international countries. The VEVO/YouTube music videos from "Descendants" and "Descendants 2" have surpassed 1 billion views. Both Descendants soundtracks have over 130 million streams worldwide.
