Three Ways That Businesses Can Prepare Employees For Hurricane Season

Businesses have similar challenges during storms. Companies located in office buildings may not have to board up windows themselves, but they still need to prepare in order to protect their employees.  APG&E suggests three basic tips on how to prepare employees for storms:

1. Plan: Flash flooding can emerge suddenly, making it difficult for employees to get to and from work. Make sure someone in the office is appointed to keep track of developing weather patterns, become knowledgeable about the potential for streets around the office that could be in danger of flooding and find out if parking garages that are situated underground are potential flood zones. This person will be able to warn employees of any hazards.
2. Prepare: Just as anyone would do at home, keep a supply of flashlights, water, snacks and blankets in the office in case an unexpected storm hits and employees are trapped at work.
3. Communicate: Many employees do not know if they are required to work when a storm is approaching. Create a message chain, so management and employees know if the office is open for business. When the decision is made to close the office, the message should go out quickly. Subsequent updates should also be communicated, as management knows information about any damage to the office, reopening after a storm and other details that are often in question.
