Today's Stolen Data Could Be Tomorrow's Decrypted Data

VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 25, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Equity Insider News Commentary - Some of the most sensitive data intercepted today may not be read for years. The threat, known in security circles as 'harvest now, decrypt later', is that encrypted financial, government and health records captured now can simply be stored until a sufficiently capable quantum computer is able to break the public-key encryption protecting them. No quantum computer can do that today, but the prospect has already turned encryption upgrades into present-day work. The global post-quantum cryptography market was valued at around $299 million in 2024 and is projected to reach nearly $2,009 million by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of roughly 48%, according to a report from MarkNtel Advisors, which points to the rising risk of quantum-enabled cyberattacks, compliance mandates and large-scale investment across finance, defense and IT. MarketsandMarkets sizes the same market at approximately $0.42 billion in 2025, growing to about $2.84 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of roughly 46.2%, and expects Europe to grow fastest on the back of regulatory alignment and coordinated government migration roadmaps. The two firms start from slightly different bases, but both project the market growing close to sevenfold within the decade.

That puts the sector on two tracks at once. On one side are the machines that could one day break today's encryption; on the other, the software and services built to withstand them. This week, both tracks produced notable news, and the pace on each side sets the urgency for the other.

Standards have given that migration a clear direction. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024, providing approved algorithms for organizations to move toward. Since then, government roadmaps in North America and Europe have begun attaching timelines to the transition, turning what was a research question into procurement and compliance work for banks, telecom operators, defense agencies and their suppliers.

On the computing side, the practical obstacle has been error correction. Physical qubits are fragile, and correcting their errors quickly enough to run long calculations has required substantial classical computing overhead. Progress on that problem, and on connecting quantum processors to conventional supercomputers, is what turns laboratory systems into infrastructure. That shift from research toward commercial deployment was a central theme of this week's Quantum World Congress, held September 23 to 25.

In industry developments and happenings in the market this week include:

IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) announced on September 22, 2026 that its researchers developed and successfully tested what the company describes as the industry's first end-to-end, real-time quantum error correction decoder running on a single standard, off-the-shelf CPU. IonQ said the result validates a core element of its Walking Cat architecture and supports its roadmap beyond 256 physical qubits toward systems controlling thousands of qubits.

A day later, IonQ announced that its Superion 256 system will be the first on-premise quantum computing deployment at NVIDIA's Accelerated Quantum Research Center, where it is expected to be connected with NVIDIA AI infrastructure for hybrid quantum-classical research. IonQ also raised its full-year 2026 revenue expectations earlier this year to between $260 million and $270 million.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (NYSE: HPE) is the infrastructure partner in a collaboration announced on September 22, 2026 by QuEra Computing to integrate neutral-atom, fault-tolerant quantum computing with on-premises high-performance computing environments powered by the HPE Cray supercomputing platform. The companies are pursuing integrated testbeds, hybrid algorithm co-design, software interoperability and system-level benchmarking.

QuEra said it has worked with HPE since 2025, and that the collaboration gives supercomputing centers, national laboratories and enterprises a path to bring its systems into their own facilities, an option aimed at organizations with data-residency, sovereignty or tightly coupled computing requirements. QuEra separately targets cloud availability of Libra, a planned fault-tolerant system, in 2028.

Arqit Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: ARQQ) took part in a live demonstration with defense company Babcock International Group at DVD 2026 in Millbrook, UK, announced September 22, 2026. Scenario data collected at one site was encrypted using Arqit software and transmitted to Babcock's Ground Deployed Advanced Mortar System at another site, demonstrating secure exchange between a headquarters and a deployed platform without physical inline encryptors.

The demonstration used a network combining 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, satellite communications and tactical radios, and follows a Memorandum of Understanding under which the two companies will explore combining Babcock's mission systems and integration capabilities with Arqit's cryptographic and secure networking technology. Defense communications are one of the areas where quantum-safe encryption is moving from policy discussion into field testing.

QSE - Quantum Secure Encryption Corp. (CSE: QSE) (OTCQB: QSEGF) (FSE: VN80), a Canadian post-quantum cybersecurity company, reported on September 17, 2026 on its participation in a Government of Canada-supported quantum technology delegation to the Netherlands, including engagement with the European Space Agency. The Company said it was one of nine Canadian quantum companies selected for the delegation, which connects Canadian firms with Dutch organizations to explore research collaboration, technology validation and commercial partnerships across the quantum and space sectors.

Earlier in September, QSE announced a distribution agreement with Nextwave (Thailand) Co., Ltd., giving its quantum-readiness assessment and discovery platform access to organizations in Thailand through Nextwave's network of more than 50 cybersecurity-focused channel partners. The Company's broader offering includes quantum entropy delivered as a service and tools designed to help organizations inventory and plan the migration of their cryptography.

Integrated Quantum Technologies Inc. (CSE: VEIL) (OTCQB: IGCRF) (FSE: Y4G1), formerly Integrated Cyber Solutions Inc., announced on September 22, 2026 the completion of the first customer engagement of its VEIL™ technology, a Proof-of-Concept with Pivotly, an AI software company developing construction estimating tools. According to the Company, VEIL reduced AI processing times in Pivotly's blueprint analysis application from hours to seconds, with most blueprints processing in approximately 3 to 5 seconds, and improved out-of-sample model performance by approximately 5 to 8 percentage points as measured by Macro-F1 score. The Company noted that the engagement focused on performance rather than data protection, that the results are specific to that application, and that no agreement for broader deployment has been entered into.

On September 24, 2026, the Company said it has updated its research paper on Informationally Compressive Anonymization, the methodology behind VEIL, in preparation for submission to the 2027 IEEE Conference on Secure and Trustworthy Machine Learning.
