Triple Canopy to Present at International Standards and Accountability Seminar
CEO Ignacio Balderas Reaffirms Company's Commitment to International Code of Conduct
RESTON, Va., Dec. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Triple Canopy, Inc., a leading provider of security and mission support services, announced today that CEO Ignacio "Iggy" Balderas will speak at a joint seminar on the "Privatization of Security: International Standards and Accountability" to be held on Dec. 7 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
Organized by the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the seminar comes shortly after the one-year anniversary of the signatory ceremony for the International Code of Conduct (ICoC) for Private Security Service Providers.
Balderas will focus his remarks on the Code and what it signifies for the private security industry. "Triple Canopy is a founding signatory of the ICoC and is proud to have helped with its introduction in Geneva last year," said Balderas. "Though it was an important first step, a lot more work remains to be done. It is critical that we develop an international governance and oversight mechanism within the next year and encourage UN member states and international organizations to help move this process forward."
Signed by 266 companies to date, the ICoC is a global initiative that aims to set global standards for the private security industry and establish independent mechanisms for effective governance and oversight.
"We must work together to ensure the Code gains worldwide acceptance and becomes an integral part of how our industry operates and selects security providers," Balderas continued. "It is our hope the UN makes adherence to the Code a requirement for its security procurements. And we encourage its member states to do the same."
The ICoC is the result of a multi-stakeholder initiative coordinated by private security companies, industry associations, civil society and individual business leaders with the assistance of the Government of Switzerland and in consultation with the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States. Triple Canopy, founded in 2003, has participated in the effort to establish an international code of conduct since the development of the Montreaux Document in 2006.
