Local labor activists to show support for AFGE and its TSA members
CHICAGO, March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees, the union for Transportation Security Officers (TSO) in Chicago, throughout Illinois and across the country, will show its gratitude for the TSA workforce with a two Solidarity Events March 10 at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports. AFGE National President John Gage will be on hand for the events.
"In appreciation of their hard work and commitment to protecting this nation, AFGE would publicly like to say 'thank you' to every TSO, and in particular, those in Chicago," Gage said.
AFGE's Solidarity Events will be attended by AFGE leaders and activists, as well as members of the AFL-CIO and its affiliate unions.
After a nine-year battle to secure workplace protections for Transportation Security Administration employees, AFGE on Feb. 4 applauded TSA Administrator Pistole for affirming collective bargaining rights and praised TSOs across the country for their unwavering commitment and tenacity in fighting for collective bargaining rights to be settled.
AFGE also is in an election for exclusive union representation at TSA. One year ago, AFGE filed a petition with the Federal Labor Relations Authority for exclusive union representation at TSA, and that election will take place March 9-April 19.
TSOs in Chicago are part of AFGE Local 777, which covers airports in Illinois and Wisconsin.
AFGE is the only union to represent TSOs since the agency's inception, and currently has more than 12,000 dues-paying members in 40 AFGE TSA Locals across the country. With more than 265,000 dues-paying members in more than 75 federal and D.C. government agencies, AFGE is the single largest federal employee union in the country.
