Tucson's 2nd Saturdays' First Anniversary on May 14th Promises to be a Huge Downtown Event
TUCSON, Ariz., April 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first anniversary of 2nd Saturdays, downtown Tucson's monthly street festival, organizers will pull out all the stops. In addition to the typical activities which include street performers, music, stilt walkers, living statues and vendors, this month's event will feature a Ferris Wheel on Congress Street in the center of activity and a new live music venue, Soul Celebration, at La Placita Plaza.
The anniversary spirit will spread beyond Congress Street to the Cricket Kids Area, which will play host to children of all ages with the popular Cricket Jumping Castle.
The historical Fox Theatre will feature I Dream in Widescreen: BFA Thesis Films from the University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film and Television. The screening will begin at 7p.m. Also starting at 7 p.m., The Hotel Congress will feature local acts Al Perry and Skip Heller. At 8 p.m., the Rialto Theatre will host Beyond the Sacred: Music & Arts Festival showcasing some of the most important underground musicians and cutting- edge international visionary artists.
The Scott Avenue Stage will also join in the anniversary celebration and festivities. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., youth graduates of MyTown Music, a community music school, will perform in celebration of the school's first anniversary. From 6:45 to 8:00 p.m., Tate Recording artist Chillie Willie Groove is scheduled to perform his mix of Latin Jazz, salsa, funk, and blues. Also scheduled is Determined Luddites (Americana/bluegrass/progressive) from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. and Michael P's Big Band (soul, funk, honky-tonk and rock) from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. All performances at the Scott Stage are free.
