TV's Candid Camera unveils movie project and other 70th anniversary plans for 2018
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif., Nov. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- TV's legendary Candid Camera program will mark its 70th anniversary in 2018 with a broadcast special, a touring stage show and a theatrical film about its founder, Allen Funt.
Candid Camera has the distinction of being the only entertainment program in TV history to have produced new episodes in each of the last eight decades. Allen Funt launched the series in 1948 and, along with his son, Peter Funt, produced episodes through the decades on CBS, ABC, NBC, HBO and TV Land. In addition there have been three theatrical films, a radio show, books and various TV specials.
"Having a 70th anniversary is a remarkable achievement," said Peter Funt, who took over hosting Candid Camera in the mid-90s. "Our new projects for 2018 underscore the lasting appeal of my Dad's unique contribution to TV and pop culture."
Peter and other cast members are on tour with "Candid Camera's 8 Decades of Smiles," a stage show featuring clips, current comedy and audience surprises. January dates include the NYCB Theater in Westbury, N.Y., Clearwater, Fla., and Rutland, Vt., along with other stops throughout 2018.
"Another exciting project is a film about my father and his early adventures with Candid Camera," explained Peter. "We have a finished screenplay, titled 'Candidly,' that really captures the fun and excitement in those early decades as Candid Camera pioneered hidden-camera television and gave birth to reality TV."
The movie is based on Allen Funt's autobiography, "Candidly, Allen Funt." "Fortunately, we own all the marvelous clips, music and memorabilia that will add enormous entertainment value to the finished movie," Peter added.
Candid Camera, Inc. is also developing a 70th anniversary TV special, with representation by the WME agency in Beverly Hills.
