UHLC and ADL Explore Religious and Legal Aspects of Immigration
HOUSTON, Oct. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University of Houston Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League will co-sponsor panel discussions on the interplay between religious scripture, law, and public immigration policy on Oct. 20 at the Law Center.
The panels, featuring local religious leaders and legal scholars, will discuss the topic: "The Effects of Immigration on Local Communities." Lauren Jones, ADL civil rights national counsel, and Geoffrey A. Hoffman, a clinical associate professor and director of the Law Center's Immigration Clinic, will moderate.
The religious leaders will focus on what each faith says about immigration, scriptures that focus on immigration, and "welcoming the stranger." Panelists will include Pastor Emmanuel Jackson of Living Word Lutheran Church, Rabbi Steve Morgen of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Deacon Sam Dunning of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, and Joe Bradford, a Muslim legal scholar.
The second panel of UHLC professors will discuss law, religion and policy regulating immigration. Participants will include Johnny Buckles, Geoffrey Hoffman and James Nelson.
