MELBOURNE, Australia, Oct. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A collection of trophies, historical photographs and personal mementos belonging to Australian Speedway legend Billy Lamont is a highlight of Mossgreen's auction of Collectors' Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia on 18 October.
Born in 1908, Wilfred Spencer Lamont set the groundwork for competitive Speedway riding in Australia and changed the face of the sport globally.
Highlights include a silver helmet trophy awarded to Billy, featuring a silver winged speedway rider astride a motorcycle, copper chain band and a central copper oval enamel inscribed medallion, with the original leather lining, chin strap and inscribed cloth label.
Also, the 1931 Championship of the World Trophy (known as Paris-Championnat du Monde de Dirt Track), awarded for the 'unofficial' World Title. The unregulated sport at that time featured a number of world championships.
One of Billy's valued possessions is a 9ct Gold Waterman's Ideal foundation pen in its original case, engraved 'Billy Lamont Publicly Elected The Most Popular Rider - 1929' as an expression of the public's affection for his spectacular riding.
"Billy Lamont was feted from Australia to the UK, Europe and North and South America, but he seemed to care less for riches and glory than the pleasure of riding his racing motorcycles," says Robert Richards, Head of Collectors' Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia at Mossgreen.
