Profile America for the 16th day of Black History Month. With the current economic pinch, African- American business owners are especially watching for signs of a turnaround. There are nearly 1.2 million black-owned businesses across the U.S., about 5 percent of all non-farm businesses in the country. These firms generate almost $89 billion in revenue each year. Among the largest revenue producing segments are retail sales, and professional, technical and scientific services. Among the states, New York has the largest number of African-American businesses, while New York City leads all cities. This special edition of Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
