TUESDAY, AUGUST 3: FIGHTING CRIME
Profile America — Tuesday, August 3rd. Today marks the 27th anniversary of a unique battle against crime — it's the annual National Night Out. All across the country, citizens, law enforcement agencies, and neighborhood organizations will gather for block parties, cookouts, and parades. The idea is to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention efforts, increase support for local anticrime programs, and strengthen partnerships between communities and police. Last year, more than 36 million people in 15,000 communities took part in the National Night Out. And there is plenty of crime to be on the watch for. Each year in the U.S., there are just over 1.4 million violent crimes, and more than 9.8 million property crimes. Profile America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
