MONDAY, AUGUST 30: TED WILLIAMS
Profile America — Monday, August 30th. The man many call the best hitter in baseball history was born on this date in 1918 in San Diego — Ted Williams. He broke into the major leagues in 1939, and played his entire career for the Boston Red Sox, ending with a lifetime batting average of .344. His 1941 average of .406 has yet to be surpassed. Williams missed five seasons at the prime of his career, first as a navy pilot in World War II and then as a Marine Corps flyer in the Korean War. When Ted Williams played his first big league game, just under 9 million people went to baseball games a year. Now, nearly 80 million fans go to American and National league ballparks annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
