SUNDAY, DECEMBER 19: WARM CLOTHING
Profile America -- Sunday, December 19th. The old song advises us to "button up your overcoat." Given the many weeks of cold weather ahead, that's good advice. But if your coat is looking threadbare, this is a good time to shop for a new one. Around the country, stores are filled with clothing designed for cold weather, and many people will take advantage of after-Christmas sales of new coats, along with hats, scarves and gloves. There are 152,000 clothing stores in the U.S. Nine thousand specialize in men's clothing, and some 35,000 carry clothes for women. Another 25,000 have clothing for the whole family. Taken together, the nation's clothing stores ring up $159 billion in sales each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
