WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7: PEARL HARBOR 70TH ANNIVERSARY
Profile America — Wednesday, December 7th. Seventy years ago today, aircraft from carriers of the Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor and other military installations in Hawaii without warning. The attack killed just over 2,400 Americans, including 1,177 aboard the battleship Arizona. The next day, President Roosevelt's declared that December 4, 1941 was a day that would "live in infamy." Congress responded by declaring war on Japan. During the war that followed, more than 16 million American men and women served in the armed forces. Of these, 292,000 were killed in battle and 671,000 wounded. Today, there are nearly 2 million surviving veterans of World War II.
