WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 2: BASEBALL HALL OF FAME'S 75TH
Profile America -- Wednesday, February 2nd. Every major sport has a hall of fame, honoring the key figures in the development of the sport and its most memorable players. The first of these, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, announced its five charter members on this date 75 years ago. The legendary players were Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and pitchers Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. In the years since, 290 other baseball stars have been elected to the hall of fame. This year, Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar were enshrined. Major league baseball continues to draw the biggest crowds among the nation's sporting teams -- with just shy of 75 million people attending games each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
