WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26: MICHIGAN JOINS THE UNION
Profile America -- Wednesday, January 26th. Michigan became the 26th state to join the Union on this date in 1837. It was a focal point for the unrest among British and French forces, settlers, and American Indians in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mining and agriculture helped develop its economy, and in the early 20th century, the state became the center of the rapidly expanding automobile industry. With more than 10,000 lakes and its extensive Great Lakes shorelines, Michigan has long been noted as a premier fishing site. When Michigan joined the Union in 1837, it had a population of less than 212,000. Now, the state is home to nearly 10.5 million people.
