MONDAY, JANUARY 3: FIRST BABY BOOMERS TURN 65

Profile America -- Monday, January 3rd.  Things were beginning to settle down in the Wilkens household in Philadelphia on this day in 1946.  Two days before, at one minute after midnight, daughter Kathleen had been born.  As momentous as her arrival was for her parents, they had no way of knowing that their daughter was the harbinger of one of the nation's most important demographic trends -- the post World War II baby boom.  Beginning with Kathleen Wilkens, almost 78 million Americans were born in the next 18 years.   That huge number has had a profound impact on schools, jobs and housing, and will affect medical care and Social Security in the near future.  Now, each year in the U.S., just over 4 million babies are born.  You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
