MONDAY, JULY 12: GOLF'S FIRST GRAND SLAM
Profile America -- Monday, July 12th. On this date 80 years ago, Bobby Jones won the only Grand Slam in golfing history. He did so by winning the U.S. Open championship by two strokes at the Interlachen Country Club at Hopkins, Minnesota. He had already won the British Open, the British Amateur, and the U.S. Amateur, the other major championships of the time. Sportswriters had to invent a new term for the unprecedented accomplishment, and came up with "Grand Slam." Jones never turned professional and retired from competition at the age of 28. His Grand Slam feat has never been duplicated. Today, just under 23 million people play golf each year in the U.S. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
