SATURDAY, JUNE 11: 24 HOURS OF LE MANS
Profile America -- Saturday, June 11th. One of the best known automobile races in the world will be run in France, from four o'clock local time this afternoon to the same time tomorrow -- the 79th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. The storied race has been run since 1923, except during and immediately after World War II. American cars have won four times -- Ford taking the checkered flag in races in the mid 1960s. The last American to co-drive the winning car was Davy Jones in 1996. The last American team to win was in 2005, racing an Audi R8. More than 20 million Americans go to automobile races across the U.S. each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
