FRIDAY, JUNE 17: DUCT TAPE
Profile America -- Friday, June 17th. No matter what the subject, it seems there's a festival somewhere in the U.S. to honor it. A perfect example starts today in Avon, Ohio -- the annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival. Some 50,000 people are expected at the three-day event, which celebrates duct tape, its fans, and the wacky things they do with it. Everything at the festival revolves around duct tape -- from sculptures to fashion to games and a parade. There will be a national "Duct Tape Dad of the Year" contest, as well as food, rides and live entertainment. Only something as widely used and appreciated could be treated with such humor. Duct tape is part of a nearly $14 billion a year industry in the U.S., making tape for nonpackaging uses. Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
