Profile America — Thursday, June 2nd. The north Atlantic hurricane season officially began yesterday and runs through November. Coastal areas stretching from North Carolina to Texas are the most vulnerable. In 1960, 14 million people lived in these areas — today that number is just under 37 million. From 1851 through last year, Florida was hit by 113 hurricanes. Texas is next at 63. Last year saw a very active season with 12 hurricanes, five of them Category 3 or higher in strength. The weather service officially began naming storms in 1950 and this year's first storm will be named Arlene.
