TUESDAY, MARCH 15: ELECTRIC RAZORS
Profile America -- Tuesday, March 15th. One choice men of today have in common with those of times past is whether to shave or grow a beard. Until this week in 1931, if the decision was to shave, the only choice was a wet shave with a safety razor. That's when the Schick Company began marketing the first electric razor to American men. The safety razor had been around for about 30 years and was a great improvement over the dangerous straight razor. As more homes became electrified, the market was ripe for an efficient electric razor to provide a quick, dry shave -- and the device proved to be an immediate hit. Today, electric razors are among the nearly $5 billion worth of small, specialized home appliances made each year in the U.S. Profile America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
