SUNDAY, MAY 27: SAM SNEAD'S 100TH
Profile America — Sunday, May 27th. Today marks the 100th birthday of one of the nation's premier golfers — Sam Snead. He turned pro at age 22 and went on to become the only golfer to win tournaments in six different decades. Blessed with a naturally smooth swing, Snead won 84 U.S tour events and another 80 tournaments worldwide, making him the winningest pro golfer of the 20th century. He also had a number of sharp comments, such as: "If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they would starve to death." Today in the U.S., more than 22 million people play golf each year. They spend just over $3 billion annually on golf shoes, clubs and other equipment. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
