TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1: FAMOUS FOOTBALL FORWARD PASS
Profile America — Tuesday, November 1st. College football changed forever on this date in 1913, when the forward pass gained national prominence when used to great effect in Notre Dame's startling upset of the Army team — 35-13. Just a few years before, the forward pass had been authorized by a rules committee of what would become the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The committee had been set up at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt to save the game — then under widespread criticism for many injuries and deaths on the playing field, and even banned by a number of schools. Today, football is one of the most popular college sports, played by 639 teams and cheered on by nearly 50 million fans, as well as millions more on television. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
