SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16: WEST VIRGINIA BRIDGE DAY
Profile America — Saturday, October 16th. Two hundred thousand people are expected to gather at the New River Gorge Bridge, near Fayetteville, West Virginia today for the 31st annual Bridge Day. The event is the world's largest extreme sports event and the biggest festival in the state. The bridge, towering 876 feet over the gorge, will draw some 500 registered "BASE" jumpers. The word "BASE" stands for building, antenna, span, and earth — fixed points for a jump with special parachutes. Only experienced jumpers are allowed to take part. While not as extreme, nearly 7.5 million Americans take part in off-road mountain biking, and more than 4.5 million go mountain and rock climbing. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
