THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6: WORLD DAIRY EXPO
Profile America — Thursday, October 6th. A long-running promotional campaign asked the question for many years: "Got milk?" In Madison, Wisconsin for the next few days, the answer will be a resounding "yes!" The world's largest dairy expo opened there Tuesday and runs through Saturday. Those attending will see some of the best dairy cattle and mingle with people from the dairy industry, from many different countries. In the U.S., we each consume 600 pounds of dairy products every year — the most of any food group. There are just over nine million milk cows — about a million fewer than in 1990. However, because of advances in breeding and nutrition, each of these hardy animals produces close to 21,000 pounds of milk annually. Compared to under 15,000 in 1990. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov .
