THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23: SINGLE AMERICANS WEEK
Profile America — Thursday, September 23rd. This is "National Singles Week," often called "Unmarried and Single Americans Week," noting that many who are unmarried do not identify with the world "single," since they may be parents, have partners or are widowed or divorced. The idea for the observance started in Ohio in the 1980s. There are close to 100 million unmarried adult Americans, more than 40 percent of all U.S. residents 18 and older. The number of people who live by themselves is just over 30 million — slightly more than one-quarter of all U.S. households. For those who are looking for a partner or a spouse, there are more than 900 dating services across the U.S., including Internet firms. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
