WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: FOOTBALL MILESTONES
Profile America — Wednesday, September 28th. It's fall and the football season is in full swing once again. Many key events in the history of the sport have occurred in September. On this date in 1892, the first night football game was played in Mansfield, Pennsylvania — although spectators were more interested in the electric lights than the game. Three years later, another Pennsylvania town, Latrobe, was the site of the first professional football game. The National Football League was formed in 1920 in Canton, Ohio — now home of the NFL Hall of Fame. And in 1970, the first NFL Monday night game was televised. More than 48 million people go to college football games each year, while the 32 teams of the NFL attract over 21 million fans annually. Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
