U.S. Lumber Coalition Applauds Trump Administration's Strong Enforcement of the U.S. Trade Laws Against Egregious Levels of Unfair Trade by Canada In Softwood Lumber

WASHINGTON, July 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced the final anti-dumping duty rate of 20.56 percent in the sixth annual antidumping review of unfairly traded Canadian softwood lumber imports into the United States. The review covers lumber imported in calendar year 2023.

"20.56% percent – that is the enormous extent to which Canadian producers dumped their lumber in the U.S market. Over 20 percent of predatory pricing that U.S. lumber producers and workers had to face in their day-to-day operations, and that is not even counting subsidies," said Andrew Miller, Chair/Owner of Stimson Lumber Company and Chairman of the U.S. Lumber Coalition. "Canada's outrageous unfair trading directly hit U.S. companies, workers, and communities during already challenging times."

"The Commerce Department has once again proven the severity of market disruption caused by Canada's unfair trading. Time has come for Canada to reconcile the size of its industry with market realities. The United States will no longer absorb Canada's massive excess capacity in lumber at the expense of U.S. mills and communities," added Miller.

The duties will help level the playing field to allow for continued U.S. production capacity increases for the United States to fully supply our own market," stated Zoltan van Heyningen, U.S. Lumber Coalition Executive Director.

Increased U.S. capacity through the enforcement of the U.S. trade laws means that today the United States can supply the vast majority of its own lumber needs. U.S. mills have added 8.8 billion board feet of capacity since 2016 in the form of new mills and expansions of existing mills. The U.S. industry has produced 30 billion additional board feet of softwood lumber during this period. These increases have more than offset any decline in unfairly traded Canadian imports and are enough lumber to build two million single-family homes.

"The United States has the natural resources to support its lumber industry. The American lumber industry and forestry sector today has the capacity to supply nearly all U.S. lumber demand, and with continued strong trade law enforcement can become self-reliant over time," concluded van Heyningen.
