U.S. News & World Report Survey: Health Experts Rank Core Lifestyle Habits Ahead of Biohacks for Longevity

New survey data shows 76% of health experts view accelerated muscle loss as a major threat for GLP-1 users, while nearly 60% identify social isolation as the top lifestyle blind spot in biological aging.

The second annual 2026 U.S. News Healthy Aging Survey of health experts indicates that while modern healthy aging trends continue to gain public attention, longevity experts, medical professionals, clinical researchers and dietitians emphasize core daily behaviors – such as physical activity, balanced nutrition and social connection – as the most effective interventions to preserve long-term healthspan and physical function.

While experts in the 2025 U.S. News Healthy Aging Survey anticipated that GLP-1 medications, AI-mediated healthcare and personal tracking devices would drive the future of healthy aging, the 2026 findings reveal critical blind spots surrounding these emerging trends. A striking 76% of experts now warn that accelerated muscle loss is a severe threat for patients using GLP-1 medications, noting that losing functional lean muscle alongside body fat can accelerate physical frailty as patients age.

Additionally, 59% of experts identified social isolation as the most underappreciated accelerator of biological aging, noting that a lack of meaningful connection sabotages sleep, compounds stress, and drives negative health effects like heart disease and dementia.

Key Survey Insights:

• Foundational Habits Over Biohacks: Physical activity (89%) and a nutrient-dense diet (89%) overwhelmingly dominated the findings as two of the most critical factors for healthy aging, followed by restorative, high-quality sleep (30%). This marks a refined focus from the inaugural survey, which prioritized the broader mind-body connection, emphasizing that core daily routines remain the most vital interventions for longevity.
• Accelerated Muscle Loss in GLP-1 Users: Roughly three in four (76%) surveyed experts agreed or strongly agreed that accelerated muscle loss is a severe health threat for individuals using GLP-1 medications.
• Social Isolation as the Top Aging Blind Spot: Nearly two-thirds (59%) cited social isolation as the most underappreciated potential accelerator of biological aging. This far outranked other factors, including sleep disruption (19%) and chronic micro-stress (18%).
• Overlooked Factors in Women's Aging: Experts identified perimenopausal and menopausal muscle and bone loss (33%) alongside delayed cardiovascular risk recognition (32%) as top unaddressed threats to women's long-term longevity.
• Skepticism Toward Longevity Tech and AI: When evaluating modern consumer wellness trends, 40% of experts selected wearable health trackers as providing tangible benefits, while 31% indicated that none of the listed biohacking trends provide proven value. Regarding artificial intelligence, one in four (24%) identified behavioral support (such as AI coaches) as having an immediate positive impact, though 21% stated AI tools offer no tangible benefit to healthspan.

Methodology
U.S. News conducted the online Healthy Aging Survey from July through August 2026. A panel of 63 health experts participated in the survey. The respondent group included longevity experts, registered dietitians, medical doctors, clinical researchers and scientists, fitness experts and pharmacists.
