The remarkable collection, started in 1962 by twin boys at age 7 in Grosse Pointe Farms, a suburb of Detroit, includes a wide range of vintage Topps Baseball, Football, and Hockey cards; Bowman Football; O-Pee-Chee Hockey; and even rare non-sports trading cards. The majority of the cards in the collection are baseball cards. The cards feature some of the most iconic names in sports history, including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Bobby Orr, Pete Rose, Jim Brown, and Joe Namath, among many others.
Now 68 years old, the brothers recalled the passion and dedication that went into building the collection during their childhood. "We started collecting in 1962 - packs were just ten cents at the corner party store," one twin brother said. "We followed all the stars of the day and, being from Michigan, were huge fans of the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. We even went across the border to Windsor, Canada, and picked up some O-Pee-Chee hockey cards, which made us especially excited to collect our favorite Red Wings cards."
By the time they stopped collecting in 1970, the brothers had amassed thousands of vintage baseball, football and hockey cards, with over 95% pulled directly from packs.
But the entire collection nearly vanished in 1983, when their father - cleaning out the basement during a separation - called to say he was throwing them all out. "I told him I'd come over immediately and pick them up," said one brother. "That call saved the collection."
Stored carefully ever since, the cards were preserved in nice condition overall - a testament to the twins' belief that they would one day be worth something. "It was a labor of love," one of the brothers said. "We spent a lot of time organizing and protecting them. The cards are very sentimental to me and my brother."
The twin brothers selected Auction Monthly to sell the entire collection of vintage sports cards as it was time to liquidate the collection so their family members wouldn't have to do it.
