Under the Scanner - Mercury in Skin Lightening Products
Mercury represents a common ingredient that has been significantly used in skin lightening products, alongside in other products such as mascara and eye makeup cleansing products, worldwide for several years. Skin lightening soaps with mercury salts prevent melanin formation thereby leading to a lighter skin tone. These soaps are primarily used in several countries across Africa and Asia, as well as colored people in North America and Europe. The soaps usually contain 1 to 3% mercury iodide and skin-lightening creams contain mercury ammonium in the concentration of 1 to 10%. Some cases of extreme use of mercury concentrations have been reported.

Mercury has been associated with several harmful effects in human body, with kidney damage being the major adverse events emerging out of using mercury-based cosmetic products. Scarring, discoloration, rashes and reduced resistance on skin are some of the adverse outcomes that may emerge from the use of mercury-based skin lightening creams. Certain other effects such as depression, psychosis, peripheral neuropathy and anxiety have also been observed. Mercury is believed to get accumulated gradually inside the skin cells, causing blue/gray pigmentation overtime. Over usage of mercury based products can also lead to mercury poisoning. Acknowledging these ill effects of mercury use in skin lightening products, some countries worldwide have banned their use in these products, while others have fixed limitations to their use. The EU placed a complete ban on use of mercury and mercury compounds in cosmetic products such as shampoos, lotions, soaps and bleaching products as ingredients. A similar ban is placed in some of the countries. However, use of mercury as an ingredient in these products continues in other parts of the world.
