Heavy-duty vehicles operating in urban environments use large amounts of fuel and are facing increasingly stringent emissions legislation in countries around the world. This is of greatest concern to the bus industry, where fuel bills are typically 14% of an operator's cost base, and emissions are concentrated in densely populated urban areas. As such the bus industry is among the most enthusiastic supporters of fuel-saving technologies, in particular hybrids, but given that new hybrid buses cost 70-100% more than conventional models, uptake has been very slow.
Vantage Power was formed in 2011 in order to develop a solution to this problem. The result is the B320 - a hybrid system designed to retrofit into the most popular bus models already on the road, allowing operators to hybridise their fleet for 50% of the current cost. Furthermore, by combining a proprietary battery pack, an advanced range extender and intelligent control system with tried and tested components, the B320 system cuts fuel consumption by £20,000 per year and emissions by 40%. In April 2014 a fully functional B320 will commence fleet trials with a London-based operator in parallel with the development of a second-generation system.
Vantage Power has raised £1.8m to date from business angels and government grants, and is invested in and partnered with the UK's largest used bus dealer, Ensignbus.
