Verizon Velocity Program Nets $6,000 Holiday Gift to Island Harvest
Verizon Presents Funds to Island Harvest During Year-End Celebration at Nassau Coliseum
NEW YORK, Dec. 28, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon on Tuesday (Dec. 28) awarded $6,000 to Island Harvest, representing the fruits of a program that linked sales of Verizon products and services on Long Island to company donations to the food collection agency.
Under the Verizon Velocity program, Verizon made cash donations of up to $65 for each qualifying order from Long Islanders who ordered Verizon products and services from Nov. 1 through the end of the year.
Verizon presented Island Harvest, Long Island's largest hunger-relief organization, a check for the total of those donations. The ceremony took place at Island Harvest's year-end celebration at the Nassau Coliseum, in recognition of the organization having met its 2010 goal of collecting 8 million pounds of food.
"Our Velocity program really paid off for Island Harvest," said Elaina Mango, Verizon marketing director for the Northeast. "It provides a great way for Long Islanders to donate to a cause that helps out their neighbors right here on Long Island. The community spirit and passion of Long island residents for a great cause really came out."
In addition to the donation from the Verizon Velocity program, the company has been assisting Island Harvest with its food collections during this holiday season. Verizon and its Long Island employees collected more than 7,000 pounds of food – an average of about 800 pounds per week – at a variety of Verizon-sponsored events across the Island.
"It was so great to see our Long Island employees pitching in and helping out," said Mango. "Food-donation events at Islanders games, the Garden City Turkey trot and at the Tanger Outlet in Deer Park, and the great partnerships we have with stores like Panera Bread, Stop & Shop, Shop Rite and select 7-11 help to solidify the longtime bonds we have with our Long Island communities and customers."
Verizon also collected food at its dozens of garages and offices across the Island, and at its two FiOS stores at 199 Fulton St. in Hempstead, and at 125 Kennedy Drive in Hauppauge.
