Verizon Wireless Surpasses $1.5 Billion Network Investment in Illinois
Improvements Made Since 2000 Have Increased Coverage and Capacity of 3G Network; Lays Foundation for 4G Launch in Chicago by End of 2010
Schaumburg, Ill., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today it has surpassed the $1.5 billion milestone in its wireless infrastructure investment in Illinois. The investment includes spending more than $135.5 million on its Illinois network through the first nine months of 2010.
The investment has served to expand network coverage and increase capacity of the company's voice and 3G high-speed wireless network, enabling more business and residential customers to use their wireless phones to make calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying clearer reception and few dropped calls.
In addition to the ongoing investment in its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has also been building the infrastructure that will bring the world's first large-scale 4G Long Term evolution network to the Chicago area. The initial availability of 4G LTE wireless in Chicago is a part of the company's network launch in 38 major metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
"This is more than just about spending dollars on equipment, it tells our customers that we understand what's important to them, and that's the strength and reliability of our network," said T.J. Fox, president–Illinois/Wisconsin Region, Verizon Wireless. "Since Verizon Wireless was formed in 2000, our mission has remained the same: We will continue to perfect our network so that our customers in Illinois know they can depend on us every time they pick up their wireless devices."
"Our LTE launch will enable us to continue to meet customer demands for significantly faster speeds and improved latency," added Fox. "We look forward to bringing a new, enhanced mobile broadband experience for businesses and consumers and enterprises throughout the United States."
Nationwide, since the company was formed, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $60 billion - 5.7 billion on average every year - to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.
